Yarmer Renewables installs solar panels, batteries and EV chargers for homes and businesses across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, from a base in the South Hams. I built their website in September 2024 and I’ve looked after it ever since.

What they needed

Solar is a considered purchase. People research for weeks, compare quotes, and want to know who is actually coming onto their roof. The site needed to explain what Yarmer fits and why, with real installs instead of stock photos. Then, once someone was ready, asking for a free survey had to be easy.

It also had to be found. Most of Yarmer’s customers search for solar in their own town, so the site needed to rank locally, not just nationally.

What I built

A fast static site in Astro and Tailwind, hosted on Netlify. Every page is built ahead of time, so there’s no server to keep patched and nothing to slow it down. The contact form sends straight to the team’s inbox through SendGrid.

The structure follows how people actually shop for solar:

  • Services, one page each for solar panels, battery storage, EV charging and commercial solar.
  • Products, showing the panels and batteries Yarmer actually fits, by brand, so nobody has to guess what they’re being quoted for.
  • Town pages for Exeter, Plymouth, Truro and Totnes. Each is written about the place itself, its housing, roofs and planning quirks, rather than the same page with the name swapped.
  • Testimonials from real customers, and a gallery of their own installations, more than 40 photos of real roofs and real kit.
  • Accreditations up front. MCS, NAPIT, RECC and QANW sit straight under the hero, because they’re the first thing a careful buyer looks for.

It keeps growing

The first version went live in September 2024. Since then the site has grown with the business, roughly in this order:

  • the town pages and local SEO work
  • a redesigned products page and a proper testimonials section
  • a new footer, typography and a light animation system
  • a gallery rebuilt as a masonry layout, with a new batch of installation photos and the weaker ones taken out

There’s no CMS to learn. When Yarmer has new photos, a new product or a change to make, they send it over and I update the site.

Keeping the claims honest

This year I went through the site and took out every advertising claim it couldn’t back up with evidence. Solar is a sector where vague promises about savings are common, and the Advertising Standards Authority takes them seriously. Every claim left on the site is one Yarmer can stand behind. I also redid the MCS logo to follow MCS’s own brand guidelines, so it shows cleanly on both light and dark backgrounds.

It’s not glamorous work, but it’s the kind of thing a site needs when it’s selling something people spend thousands on.

Where it landed

A site that’s been live and growing for over two years, scoring 94 for performance, 100 for accessibility and 100 for SEO on a mobile test. Built solo, working directly with the team.

If you run a trade or installation business and your website isn’t pulling its weight, get in touch. I also work with clients across the South West.
